A sustainable Apple device program that widened access

Mother of God School in Ardeer is a Catholic primary for Prep to Year 6 students. As a small school, it prides itself on the Brigidine values of justice and inclusion; [1] you’ll find families of all faiths among its ranks, and the administration views that mix as an asset. The school makes a point of getting to know every child and family, with a special focus on those who are vulnerable or have additional learning requirements.

For years, the school's technology had been kept running on a very limited budget supported by a trusted technician, Trevor Mallia. When Trevor joined EA in 2025, it was essential that the school had continuity; before any new plan could take shape, EA needed to show that the relationship, care and practical support the school relied on would continue.

EA worked first with the principal, then with the wider leadership team, to explore what was possible, without asking the school to commit before it was ready. The goal was not a perfect environment in one step, it was a credible first step that could lower the cost of keeping technology running and give the school room to improve over time.

For Mother of God, the right plan had to do two things at once: give every student dependable access now, and remain realistic for a small school to sustain.

Together, Mother of God and EA moved teachers from PCs to Macs and established a consistent student fleet of iPads. The student devices weren't the newest available, but they could run current software and meet the needs of a primary classroom. This was a deliberate stepping stone: use fit-for-purpose equipment now, reduce the burden created by the old environment, and put the school in a position to purchase new devices in its next refresh.

Assunta Iacovino, the principal, says the expense has been less than what it would have cost to keep the older gear running.

To make sure the transition was smooth, a day of professional learning was put in place at the start of the year so teachers could put their new devices to work in the classroom with confidence. Where necessary, further support and onsite training have been made available.

For us, this means that we can now provide our students with the same opportunities available to other students in more affluent school communities.
Assunta Iacovino, Principal

The school sees these modern tools as good for student learning and for the wellbeing and efficacy of its staff. In the end, the program has been a practical way for Mother of God to combine social justice and financial prudence, allowing a small school to offer its students more opportunity without straining the budget.
